Are carbine setups still the best?

Is the mid-length gas system becoming the standard for 16" ARs, or do carbine-length setups still have their place?

A mid-length gas system on a 16-inch rifle just feels smoother to me. Carbine length works okay but I like the softer recoil impulse of the mid-length, it makes it easier to track the sights during fast shooting.
