I'm thinking about adding a heat shield and a bayo lug combo to my Win 1897. Has anyone done this before? Is it a complicated process, or pretty straightforward?

This isn't just a simple plug and play situation. You might find yourself having to carve out some grooves in the barrel to get that heat shield to sit right. It requires a steady hand and the right tools. If you’re into light gunsmithing and have access to a drill press or some good files, you can definitely handle it. But if you’re looking for that clean, pro look, take your time with it. Or better yet, maybe think about getting a pro to take care of it for you.

Just a heads-up about the front sight. Depending on your barrel, you might find that you have to mod or even take it off to make sure the shield sits just right. I actually had to file mine down a bit and do a little re-bluing, but it was worth it for the final look.

If you’re willing to put in some effort, that will definitely be worth it. You’ll have a 1897 that stands out every time you open the safe. Personally, I’d go for it… just be sure to do it neatly instead of rushing and ending up with regrets.
