Anyone using a thread protector?

Do I need a thread protector, or can I just skip it to keep things lighter?

I put one on every threaded barrel I own, a bit of cheap insurance. People skip it until they mess up the threads in their range bag

I skipped using one for a while and ended up putting a ding in the threads while it was just bouncing around in my bag. It wasn't a huge deal at first but then it became one. Now I just leave it on and don't even think about it anymore.
