I came across a chance to buy a couple of used firearms from a neighbor and the price looks reasonable. What do you usually check when inspecting something like this?

I suggest you check at the barrel and rifling condition using a bore light. Cycle the action to see how smooth it feels, check for any rust or pitting, test the trigger pull and don’t forget to inspect high-wear areas like the rails or locking surfaces.

Also look for rust, pitting, smooth action, good lockup and no shady backyard “custom work.”

The above mentioned items are spot on, but I would add, "check the stock for cracks and soft spots due to excess oil".

First thing I check is wear in weird spots, not just overall condition. Then I run the action slow and feel for anything off. If something feels wrong, I walk.
