I'm using a mag extension and pistol grip on my M4. I'm curious if it's legal to keep the original 5rd tube's limiting lock ring while adding a plug for the extension.

Basically, the gun would still only hold 5 rds unless someone removes the mag cap and lock ring. I'm thinking about this mainly for easier upkeep and because I like the look. I've also considered switching to a field stock for a full 7rd tube, but this setup feels good for now. Just want to make sure I'm not breaking any rules once I install the extension.

CT has specific rules regarding semi-auto shotguns. If you’re thinking about adding a pistol grip to your shotgun, keep in mind that it could classify your firearm as an "assault weapon" depending on a few other features it has. It's definitely worth double-checking to make sure your setup is all good and doesn't accidentally run into any issues with CT's AWB.

Connecticut's laws are pretty complicated and pretty strict, so it's really a good idea to reach out directly to CT DEEP to get the lowdown on the hunting stuff. And when it comes to that concern about assault weapon classification with your pistol grip, definitely chat with a Connecticut firearms attorney.
