I've been thinking it might be nice to take my 5-year-old fishing for our first time together. We saw some fishing gear at a local store, and it really sparked my interest. Since I don't have any experience myself, I'm not sure what to grab for a starting point. Are those kid-sized rods decent for beginners? I want something simple that we can have fun with, nothing fancy. Just want to make some great memories out there!

The kid packs are fine if you're not sure if they'll stick with it. Can be a good way to get them excited about it having a character they like plastered on their gear. Highly recommend swapping the line for some trilene red box or the like. The stuff that comes on them will have a lot of memory in it and coil, be fragile, and stiff. It's worth it for some ok line over the big spools of stuff that's cheap. 6lb test would be my choice for a kid pole.

Keep it simple for tackle. If the kit comes with some bobbers and hooks you're all set to flip some rocks and drown some earthworms. Use small hooks, and cast around some Lilly pads or near docks, rocks, under tree limbs near shore. Anything that can be structure for fish and you should be able to pull in some bluegill
